Wood-wool lighters rather than fluid or chemical cubes. Lighter fluid is something you taste for the first hour, and in a kamado that flavour sits in the ceramic where it does not come out again.

Boretti
Ceramic from a brand most people already know
€701.00
Too few measurements yetWe have only recently started tracking this price. Once we have measured enough days, this will say whether now is a good moment.
In the Netherlands Boretti is known mostly for kitchen ranges, which is exactly why this kamado is here. It is sold in shops people already walk into, and that lowers the barrier in a way a specialist-only brand does not.
A thirty-two centimetre grate is the size you cook on for two to four people. It comes with a cast iron grid, a charcoal basket and a grill lifter, and the top vent is built so rain does not run into it. That last point sounds like a detail and is not: a kamado lives outdoors.
What Boretti does not publish is the weight, and at this size that is the question that matters. Reckon on moving it with two people, and stand it on something that can take heat.
Who it suits: Anyone starting small who would rather buy a brand the high street carries.
Price alert
Kamados drop hardest at the end of the barbecue season and around Black Friday. Leave your email address and we will send a message as soon as the price falls, or only once it goes below your figure.

No price history yet: we have only just started measuring.
This is what we know for certain. Measurements the manufacturer or the shop does not state are left out rather than estimated. A grate size or a weight that is not there is one we do not have.

Measuring
RecommendedThe gauge in the lid measures the air at the top of the dome, not the meat and not the grate. For anything taking more than an hour, core temperature is the only number that counts.

Protection
RecommendedCeramic copes with frost, but the hardware and hinges do not cope with months of rain. At this size a cover is the cheapest maintenance there is.

Maintenance
RecommendedAsh in the base blocks the bottom vent, and a kamado that gets no air holds no temperature. A hook that reaches the back of the firebox is the difference between two minutes of work and half a teardown.

Maintenance
Can waitThe felt between dome and base wears, and a kamado drawing air past the lid can no longer be held at a low setting. This is the part that comes due after a few years, and it is replaceable without tools.

Go to bolEvery bag fits every kamado. What differs is the order: bags the maker sells as restaurant grade or large pieces come first, because large lumps let air through the stack and fines smother themselves.

Sold as restaurant grade, which for charcoal is mostly about piece size: large lumps let air through the stack rather than packing down.

Kamado Joe’s own charcoal, sold on piece size, and the name is the pitch. The bag holds 9.07 kilos, which is twenty American pounds.

Quebracho is among the densest woods sold as charcoal, and so burns long and hot. Usually the cheapest kilo on this list.

Marabu with a long burn, in the same bracket as the other marabu here. Useful when that one is out of stock, since availability shifts weekly.
