Ceramica Medium

Four grates in two materials, at the size most people actually need

Too few measurements yet

We have only recently started tracking this price. Once we have measured enough days, this will say whether now is a good moment.

A thirty-six centimetre grate is the size this site points most people to: enough for four to six, and small enough that you light it midweek without it becoming a project.

What stands out about the Ceramica is what comes inside it. You get four half-moon grates, two in cast iron and two in stainless steel, plus deflector plates and a charcoal basket. At this size most brands sell you the second grate separately and treat cast iron as an option. Here it is all in the box, and the kamado stands on a wheeled frame.

Boretti does not publish a weight, which is a pity on a kamado you may want to roll into the shed. The outside dimensions are stated, and those are the ones you measure the gate with.

Who it suits: Anyone who wants everything in the box at the usual size rather than a list of options.

Strong

  • Four grates in two materials included as standard
  • Deflector plates and charcoal basket in the box
  • Complete with its frame, so no separate stand to buy

Less strong

  • Boretti publishes no weight
  • A thinner second-hand market and fewer spare parts than the specialist brands

Firelighters

Fuel

Essential

Firelighters

Wood-wool lighters rather than fluid or chemical cubes. Lighter fluid is something you taste for the first hour, and in a kamado that flavour sits in the ceramic where it does not come out again.

Meat thermometer

Measuring

Recommended

Meat thermometer

The gauge in the lid measures the air at the top of the dome, not the meat and not the grate. For anything taking more than an hour, core temperature is the only number that counts.

Cover 15–21 inch

Protection

Recommended

Cover 15–21 inch

The size that fits almost every medium and large, including most models with side shelves. To be safe, measure the width across the shelves rather than the diameter of the ceramic.

Ash tool

Maintenance

Recommended

Ash tool

Ash in the base blocks the bottom vent, and a kamado that gets no air holds no temperature. A hook that reaches the back of the firebox is the difference between two minutes of work and half a teardown.

Gasket felt

Maintenance

Can wait

Gasket felt

The felt between dome and base wears, and a kamado drawing air past the lid can no longer be held at a low setting. This is the part that comes due after a few years, and it is replaceable without tools.

Charcoal for this one

Every bag fits every kamado. What differs is the order: bags the maker sells as restaurant grade or large pieces come first, because large lumps let air through the stack and fines smother themselves.
