Kamado Joe
Sixty-one centimetres, and the first generation is the affordable one
€1,499.00
Too few measurements yetWe have only recently started tracking this price. Once we have measured enough days, this will say whether now is a good moment.
The Big Joe is the Classic at sixty-one centimetres, and that is a considerably bigger jump than the fifteen centimetres suggests: the surface area nearly doubles. Two briskets, three racks of ribs, or a turkey with everything alongside.
This first generation is still sold next to the II and the III, and as with the Classic I the difference is in the apparatus around it, not the ceramic. Anyone who needs the size and not the tiered grate system buys the same mass here for hundreds less.
Do bear in mind a Big Joe weighs over a hundred kilos with its frame. It arrives on a pallet and does not casually move anywhere afterwards.
Who it suits: Anyone who needs a Big Joe’s size and not the later generations’ accessories.

This is what we know for certain. Measurements the manufacturer or the shop does not state are left out rather than estimated — a grate size or a weight that is not there is one we do not have.

EssentialWood-wool lighters rather than fluid or chemical cubes. Lighter fluid is something you taste for the first hour, and in a kamado that flavour sits in the ceramic where it does not come out again.

Measuring
RecommendedThe gauge in the lid measures the air at the top of the dome, not the meat and not the grate. For anything taking more than an hour, core temperature is the only number that counts.

Protection
RecommendedFor the XL sizes, which rarely fit under anything and therefore stand outside all year. Roomy enough to fall over a stand with side shelves.

Maintenance
RecommendedAsh in the base blocks the bottom vent, and a kamado that gets no air holds no temperature. A hook that reaches the back of the firebox is the difference between two minutes of work and half a teardown.

Maintenance
Can waitThe felt between dome and base wears, and a kamado drawing air past the lid can no longer be held at a low setting. This is the part that comes due after a few years, and it is replaceable without tools.

Baking
Can waitA kamado reaches the temperature that cooks a pizza in three minutes without effort; what is missing is a stone that bakes the base along with it. This one is cut to the Classic size.
