Looftlighter

Blows superheated air at the charcoal instead of holding a flame to it. You aim it at one spot, that spot starts glowing, and that decides where your fire begins.

What to look out for

The real difference from a firelighter is not speed but control. You hold the stream on one point and the fire starts there; take it away and it spreads out calmly from that point. A firelighter burns out where it lies and sets its neighbours going meanwhile, and in a kamado the number of burning spots is exactly what sets your temperature.

Against that, you need mains power where the kamado stands. For anyone whose barbecue lives at the end of the garden that is the whole story, and then firelighters costing a fraction do the same work with more patience.

It does not replace lighter fluid so much as make it pointless, and with ceramic that is no detail: fluid soaks into the wall and comes back out months later. A device that uses nothing but air cannot make that mistake.
