Supermarket briquettes give smoke and ash; a kamado is built for large lumps that burn for hours. Marabu is the classic choice — hard wood, little ash, and what is left over gets reused next time.

The Bastard
The successor to the best-selling kamado in the Netherlands
€1,849.00
Too few measurements yetWe have only recently started tracking this price. Once we have measured enough days, this will say whether now is a good moment.
The Urban Large was the country’s best-selling model for years; the Core is how The Bastard succeeds it. Heavier ceramic, a hinge that makes the lid lighter, and a top cap that holds its setting — precisely the three things the previous generation was pulled up on.
Complete means a rolling stand and two side shelves. The same Core Large is also sold as a Solo, with about four hundred euros between them; that is the frame, and it is worth putting the two side by side.
Who it suits: Anyone wanting the standard size on the current generation, ready to go.

No price history yet — we have only just started measuring.
This is what we know for certain. Measurements the manufacturer or the shop does not state are left out rather than estimated — a grate size or a weight that is not there is one we do not have.
These are the same kamado packed differently — usually with or without the frame, sometimes with accessories thrown in. The name is the shop's; the price difference below is today's, against the bare kamado on this page.
This kamado, priced as above: €1,849.00
Note: the configuration with more in the box is cheaper here than the bare kamado. That happens more often than you would think, and no product page says so.
Price alert
Kamados drop hardest at the end of the barbecue season and around Black Friday. Leave your email address and we will send a message as soon as the price falls — or only once it goes below your figure.

EssentialWood-wool lighters rather than fluid or chemical cubes. Lighter fluid is something you taste for the first hour, and in a kamado that flavour sits in the ceramic where it does not come out again.

Indirect cooking
EssentialWithout a deflector the meat sits straight over the fire and a kamado is an expensive grill. The deflector turns it into an oven, which is what low and slow rests on. Check whether your complete set already came with one.

Measuring
RecommendedThe gauge in the lid measures the air at the top of the dome, not the meat and not the grate. For anything taking more than an hour, core temperature is the only number that counts.

Protection
RecommendedThe size that fits almost every medium and large, including most models with side shelves. To be safe, measure the width across the shelves rather than the diameter of the ceramic.

Maintenance
RecommendedAsh in the base blocks the bottom vent, and a kamado that gets no air holds no temperature. A hook that reaches the back of the firebox is the difference between two minutes of work and half a teardown.

Maintenance
Can waitThe felt between dome and base wears, and a kamado drawing air past the lid can no longer be held at a low setting. This is the part that comes due after a few years, and it is replaceable without tools.
